What Stands Out
The premium market — and what it buys you
San Diego's $73/night average is the highest we've measured. Daycare follows the same pattern at $41/day — $15 more than DFW and $9 more than Denver.
But high prices don't just reflect the cost of living. San Diego facilities invest more heavily in staffing and care depth than cheaper markets:
- 46% have staff sleeping overnight — the highest rate of any metro, versus 38% in Phoenix, 35% in Denver, and just 23% in DFW
- 54% administer medication — tied with Denver for the highest, suggesting a willingness to handle dogs with complex medical needs
- 44% offer overnight potty breaks — far ahead of the next metro (Denver at 37%)
- 50% offer training — the highest rate we track
In short, San Diego's premium buys more attentive, hands-on care. Whether that justifies a 50% markup over DFW depends on what you value.
Almost entirely independent
Only 4 of 79 facilities are national chains — a 5% rate that's second only to Toronto's 4%. The remaining 95% are independent, with 32 explicitly owner-operated (41%).
San Diego's boarding market has a distinctly local feel. Many facilities are run by their founders and market themselves as boutique or specialized operations. The low chain presence likely reflects both the city's independent business culture and the difficulty chains have competing in a market where customers expect personalized, premium care.
Cage-free is the norm, not the exception
55% of San Diego facilities are cage-free — second only to Phoenix at 59%. Combined with the high staff-overnight rate, this paints a picture of a market that's moved decisively away from the traditional kennel model.
The flip side: cage-free environments require more behavioral screening. 42% of San Diego facilities require a temperament test, and 25 require spay/neuter (32%). If your dog hasn't been assessed for group play before, expect a trial day or evaluation visit before your first boarding stay.
Pool access leads the pack
26% of San Diego facilities offer pool or water play — the highest rate of any metro we track. Phoenix and Denver tie at 22%, while Toronto trails at 9%.
San Diego's year-round mild weather makes outdoor water features practical and appealing. Several facilities in the North County area (Oceanside, Encinitas, Escondido) feature splash pools and water play areas as signature amenities.

Methodology
This report is based on 79 enriched facility profiles in the Kennel Index database for San Diego County as of March 2026. Each facility's data was extracted from their public website and verified against Google Business profiles. Pricing data is available for 41 of the 79 facilities. Percentages reflect the share of all 79 indexed facilities where a feature was confirmed — facilities that don't disclose a feature on their website are counted as not offering it.
